Visual Illuminations:
An Artist's Journey Shared

By Lina Johnson on Special Assignment

 If you are looking for inspiration in the New Year, look no further than Sierra Madre Book Store. Here you will find a very special book that has been published by the artist herself, Susan Babson. Susan has been a Sierra Madre resident· for 29 years. She has been fascinated with art and imagination since she was. a child;

    The art work that Susan has compiled in her book entitled "Visual Illuminations' is the result of ten years of diligent creative expression. Her artistic concepts derive from her ability to fuse her passion for nature with introspection. This fusion enables Susan to create energized pieces of art that reflect an inner landscape.

    What is really unique about her book is that she shares the process of developing her pieces, while encouraging the reader’s inner artist to move from a passive existence to active participation in the creative world. She describes the medium that she works in and the symbolism that exists in her work and why it is there. It is both informative and inspirational for artists or people who would like to begin working creatively.

    Originally, from Northern California, Susan acquired her BA degree from Humboldt State University in fine art. In 1968, she moved to Southern California where she completed her Master's degree at USC in three dimensional design. Upon completing her education she began her teaching career, initially, at Walden school and then at Flintridge Preparatory School. There she has been teaching for 27 years and has been head of the visual art department for the last fifteen.

 Motivating her students in various artistic mediums such as ceramics, drawing and painting to digital media, Susan has spent her life sharing her passion for art and creativity and inspiring others to create. With this book, she opens the doors of creativity for those that want to participate not only by sharing her vibrant creations and encouraging words but by taking initiative to self-publish.
